Waitress Soon To Close On Broadway
Grab a slice of pie whilst you still can!
The beloved hit Broadway musical Waitress is readying up its last batch of pies, the final weeks are drawing in and it's only a matter of time before the Broadway bakery is closed. The musical must end on January 9 as the Ethel Barrymore Theatre prepares to welcome in a new Broadway show. I wonder if the smell of pies cooking will still linger, as a reminder that something so sweet once graced the stage.
In 2016, Waitress officially opened on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre where it made history with being an all-female team - the top four creative spots, costume designer and musical director were all women! Following four Tony Award nominations including Best Musical, 33 previews and 1,544 performances, the production closed its doors when Broadway fell dark in 2020. In 2021, the smell of pies filled the Ethel Barrymore Theatre when the show reopened for a limited engagement - making it the first Broadway musical to begin performances following the pandemic.

The production hired baker Stacy Donnelly and a small business owner called Dawn Mayo to teach the cast how to work with dough, crack eggs and sift flour. Mayo also created all the prop pies which are used during the show! Also, when you walk into the theater please be sure you've eaten beforehand - the smell of cooking pies fills the room as real pies are warming off-stage to help immerse the audience.
